Meet The Team: Stuart Liston, Service Delivery Manager

When your server fails on a Saturday morning, who do you call? For many Australian businesses, the answer is simple: their IT provider. But not all providers are the same. Some treat technical problems as transactions. Others understand that behind every crashed server or failed backup is a business owner who needs their company running smoothly. At Discover, we’ve built our reputation on being the latter, providing managed IT services that genuinely integrate with our clients’ operations rather than just responding to tickets.

Stuart Liston, our Service Delivery Manager, has been with Discover for over 12 years, leading our technical team through countless projects, emergencies, and transformations. His journey from motor mechanic to IT expert offers insights into what makes truly effective IT support. We sat down with Stuart to discuss his approach to service delivery and what sets Discover apart.

From Prestige Motors to Managed Services

Stuart’s career path might seem unusual for an IT professional, but it’s precisely this background that shapes his approach to client relationships. After years of working on luxury European vehicles, including Porsche, Jaguar, and Aston Martin, Stuart made a bold career change, retraining entirely in IT.

His first IT role came through a short-term contract covering for another technician. What was supposed to be four weeks turned into four and a half years. The secret? Relationships.

“Whilst my IT skills weren’t fully developed at that point, I’d spent a lot of time working with people,” Stuart recalls. “I just talked to them and made them feel heard. If someone had an IT problem, I made sure they knew I was going to find a solution for them, even if I didn’t have it right at hand.”

When Stuart joined Discover full-time, he brought this customer-first mindset with him. Starting with just two days a week, Stuart gradually took over all operations, running the entire business solo before we grew into the team we have today.

Managing Remote Teams with Purpose

Stuart leads a technical team that works primarily remotely, with staff in the office once or twice weekly. His approach centres on helping the team understand the impact of their work.

“It’s important to show them how we can help our customers because that’s where people get the most joy. It’s great to help someone who might be stressed,” Stuart explains. “It’s like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t get my work done, can you please help?’ ‘Yep, not a problem. We’ve got you, we’ve got your back.’ That’s the biggest thing that we can give to our customers.”

At Discover, we understand that technical support isn’t just about solving problems. It’s about respecting people’s time, understanding their workflow, and integrating seamlessly with their day.

The Joy of Tangible Results

When asked about exciting projects, Stuart lights up discussing server builds and infrastructure upgrades. These projects represent significant investments for our clients and offer our team the satisfaction of delivering visible, measurable improvements.

“There’s a real tangible outcome at the end because you take it live and all of a sudden you’re talking to people about how it’s going and they’re like, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s so fast now. Oh, this is amazing,” Stuart shares.

Whether it’s installing faster internet connections, deploying new servers, or travelling to client farms outside Melbourne, these projects provide tangible results that clients can immediately feel.

When Things Go Wrong

Of course, not every day brings the satisfaction of a smooth server deployment. Stuart recalls one particularly challenging situation with a long-term client who had delayed replacing ageing servers.

“One of their servers failed,” Stuart remembers. “Due to the age of the server, the recovery process was arduous to say the least. We spent part of a Saturday and all of a Sunday getting this server recovered.”

The recovery required Stuart to work late into the night, going home at 2 am for a few hours’ sleep before returning at 6 am to continue. Fortunately, Discover had previously installed proper backup and disaster recovery equipment on site, making the recovery possible in the first place.

“If we hadn’t had the right equipment and the right disaster recovery equipment on site, it never would have happened,” Stuart notes. “The customer was able to see straight away that if we had done the upgrades, they may not have had the failure.”

These challenging situations demonstrate why we emphasise proactive maintenance and regular upgrades. Modern backup and disaster recovery solutions aren’t luxuries but essential business continuity tools.

Growing Through Collaboration

We participate actively in peer groups with other managed service providers across Australia. Rather than viewing this as competition, Stuart sees immense value in the collaboration.

“The peer group’s been great because it means you can see other people’s points of view. Sometimes they’re struggling with the same things, and sometimes they’ve struggled with things that you’ve mastered, so you’re able to impart that knowledge.”

We also maintain membership in SMB IT Pro, an industry association that provides continuous education on standards, compliance, and cybersecurity threats. This commitment to ongoing learning ensures we stay current with evolving technology and best practices.

The Discover Difference When It Comes to Managed IT Services

What truly sets Discover apart is how we view our client relationships.

“We’re a part of your business. We’re not just a contractor that rolls up occasionally,” Stuart emphasises. “We’re an integral part of your business and we include you in our business as you should include us in yours.”

This integration becomes particularly valuable during IT business reviews, where we help clients understand how technology investments support their broader business goals. For small and medium-sized businesses, this approach proves especially valuable. We provide them with enterprise-level expertise and consistent, repeatable processes.

What’s Ahead for Discover?

As Discover continues growing, our focus remains on delivering exceptional service to businesses across Melbourne and Adelaide. We’ve invested heavily in automation and efficient processes to ensure consistent, high-quality results for every client.

Stuart’s advice for anyone aspiring to a similar role reflects this balanced approach: “You need a deep technical background in order to have technical conversations with customers. You need to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, and you need to be confident in the technologies you’re using. But you also need an understanding of how business works.”

This combination of technical expertise and business acumen defines how we operate. We don’t just maintain your systems; we help you understand how technology investments improve operational efficiency and support business growth.
